What do you really want?

Have you ever wanted something very badly? You prayed and prayed for that special thing because you knew that it was exactly what you wanted? I know that I have. But sometimes things that we think we really want are not the best things for us. We are finite people and we can not see things the way that God does. I am so very grateful that God is in control and that He gives us what He knows that we need and not what we think that we want.

A very good example of this can be seen in my six year old sons' bedtime prayer the other night. As he lay down to pray this is what he said: "Dear God, thank you that I will live with Mama all the time." This sweet little comment gave me pause because it just showed that we do not always pray in the proper way. I couldn't help but think that God must have smiled at that prayer. While our son is very happy to be living at home right now he will not always want to live here. There will come a day when he will spread his wings and fly out on his own. Then he will not be living with me all the time. I dare say that as he gets older living with his mother all the time will not be what he is praying for! Even though his prayer was very touching and heartfelt, those sentiments will pass and he will soon pray for other things.

So you see, we don't always pray the way that God would have us to pray. It is best to trust God and remember that He is in control. Even though we may think that we want something, we don't always know what is best for us. Take God at His word and believe that He will give you the true desires of your heart, if you will only seek His face.
